United Airlines and ANA have dropped the price of their flights from Calgary to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan down to between $548 and $648 CAD roundtrip including taxes!
The flights have 1 stop each way.
From Osaka, it's a 26 minute train ride ($17) to the beautiful city of Kyoto if you use the special rapid trains on the JR Kyoto Line.
You can also fly into Tokyo but home from Osaka for the same price. It's also worth trying many other cities in Japan instead of Osaka. See instructions below.
Update 11/2 @ 3:00 PM - It looks like this is over. Some cheap ones are still showing up on Skyscanner but through the slow booking sites (eDreams, Tripair) who may not have their prices updated yet.

NOTE: April 29 to May 5 is Japan's 'Golden Week' when everyone in Japan goes on holidays, meaning everything is very busy, booked, etc.
The best time to view cherry blossoms depends on the location in Japan, and varies each year. As a general rule, in many areas it is from late March to early April.
How to find and book this deal
1. Try the following Google Flights search:
Google Flights: Calgary to Tokyo, Japan
Google Flights: Calgary to Osaka, Japan
- click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and browse for cheap date combinations
- look for the dates that are $620 to $670 CAD roundtrip.
2. Go to Skyscanner or Flighthub
- Search for a flight from Calgary to Tokyo or Osaka, Japan
- Use the same dates you found on Google Flights

You can also fly into Tokyo but home from Osaka for the same price. It's also worth trying many other cities in Japan instead of Osaka.
1. Try starting with searches like these on Google flights, and play around with the dates.
Google Flights: Calgary to Tokyo, and then Osaka to Calgary
Google Flights: Calgary to Tokyo, and then Tokyo to Osaka, and then Osaka to Calgary
2. Go to Skyscanner or Flighthub
- Click on the 'Flights' tab
- Change the search type from 'Return' to 'Multi-City'
- Try the same flight itinerary and dates you found on Google Flights. The price will usually be lower on Skyscanner or Flighthub.

Just booked flights for April to Haneda. Much appreciated, it made my trip a maybe to YES. Half the price I paid for same time this year, no brainer.
I booked directly via the ANA website and still got the same pricing.
With flights Calgary to Tokyo (return) that have a stopover in Vancouver each way. would it be possible to NOT use the Calgary to Vancouver portion of the ticket and just catch the flight out of and in to YVR? It appears to cost twice as much to book a YVR-Tokyo flight, even though the Calgary flights stop in YVR. ??

Unfortunately not. All airlines automatically cancel the rest of your ticket once any leg is intentionally missed. You may want to keep an eye on alerts from YVR Deals. Great prices from Vancouver to Japan come up somewhat regularly, although in this instance, ANA didn't include flights from Vancouver in their price drop (only Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax).
Thanks for posting this deal, google flights tracker took 2 hours longer to notify me of the price change! I booked directly with ANA, YYC-HND return Osaka--HND-YYC $627. I was looking for this flight the past 3 week and they were double(+1200$). ANA is the best airline I have flown, that along with peace of mind are why I chose to book directly with them.

Looks like the price drop ended at noon, Nov 2. Prices are back to over $1,000 now!

ANA had a few other great prices in early 2019 involving 2-in-1 trips with Hong Kong and Japan, but just the one sale that was exclusively to Japan.

Thank you Chris!!! I've been following your website for quite some time now and finally it paid off. Japan was in my bucket list and actually a real contender for our next year's vacation. When I got your email on Friday night I went directly to Google Flights and couldn't believe it was true, I was redirected to Expedia and was able to book for the three of us (wife and kid) for $598 each!!! We are heading to Tokyo Haneda in late August 2020. I checked again today Sunday and the deal is now gone! Good thing that I acted quickly. We now have 9 months ahead to do all the planning.
